Woke up listening to brumbies eating and moving around near the tents. Was a bit concerned that Joe would fart and they would stampede all over the tents, but they just ran off when he farted.
Got going early to ride the 30 km to Borroloola. I lost a pannier along the way and had to make some repairs while Joe went on to town. Caught up with him at the MacArthur River and then we carried on into town.
Not a lot here unless you fish, but we thought it was great. Had a toasted sandwich for breakfast and then booked into the caravan park. Did some shopping for the next few days.
Internet here is not working and it has been sent to Darwin to get fixed. I have tethered the Ipad to the NextG phone to update the blog, but there are limitations with photos so I will try and upload them at our next stop Cape Crawford.
Steak and salad for tea tonight, but first...a few drinks at the Borroloola pub.
We were sitting in the camp kitchen updating the blog and Geoff and Barb (who had given us the mandarins) offered us a rum and coke wth cheese and biscuits to get us going before tea. Had a great chat with them. They are from Point Sorrell in Tas. They were telling us about a local they know, Ray who has 27 children to various women. His most recent wife who he has been with for 12 years is Aboriginal and he traded a 20 Hp outboard motor for her when she was 19.
Geoff and Barb went off to have dinner with Ray and a few others while we went looking for the pub to have a beer. Found the pub but it looked derelict (although we were told it opened at 6:00) so we went to the restaurant and who should we see, Geoff and Barb. Tried to order a beer, but they would not serve us unless we had a meal. Geoff and Barb did some fast talking and were able to buy us beers because they were having a meal there.
After the beer we headed back for camp and Louise who worked at the park gave Joe the news that Sophie the dog had eaten the sausages we were defrosting. Pretty funny, but she was upset and offered us a beer or wine to compensate. Joe had a beer, and she brought over a bottle of red for me. Big mistake...it's so long since I had any red.
We had a delicious meal of steak and salad washed down with lots of red. A good night had by all. While we were eating tea, more guys turned up for a chat. Seems we are the only interesting thing in Borroloola at the moment.
We decided to ride from Tidal River to the top of Cape York 3 years ago. In 2011 we went from Tidal River to Coffs Harbour - 1600 km. 2012 we rode from Coffs Harbour to Cairns - 2400 km. 2013, we rode from Cairns to the top of Cape York via the Old Telegraph Track. Once we finished the Cape York ride, we decided we might as well continue right around Australia. This year 2014, we are riding from Cairns to Darwin via The Savannah Way, 2800 km. Read about our previous trips below.
