Day 6 - 4 June - Georgetown to Gilbert River - 85 km

We were up early, but did not get away until late because I was obsessing over not being able to add the photos to the blog and wanted to get as much done while we were somewhere that had reasonable Internet and PCs.  I went to the Visitors Centre at 8:00 and started uploading photos.  Joe joined me for awhile and then headed off down the road and we planned to meet at the 20 km mark.  I worked on the frustratingly slow Internet until 9:20 and then headed off after Joe.

At the 20 km mark was an historic site called the Cumberland Chimney.  Joe waited there about 25 minutes for me and when I got there we went and looked at the site which also had a white lily lake.  Not as good as the one we saw last year in Lakeland National Park, but not bad.

Headed off and made good time with a good surface and a tailwind most of the time.  Hills have flattened out as well which always helps.

Got to Gilbert River about 2:30 which is where we intended to camp for the night.

Very hot, so although there was not much water in the river we got in and had a paddle to cool off.  We then lay in the shade and read or slept.  Very similar to work in many ways although we were probably more productive ;-))

Set the tents up back from the road behind some trees.

Had dinner beside the road on the bridge across the Gilbert.  Dinner was gourmet - pasta with sardines in tomato sauce.

Went to bed early and listened to the sound of dingos howling in the distance.
