Day 8 - 6 June - Croydon to Leichardt Lagoon - 130 km

Up early today, breakfast and packed up before dawn.  It is 150 km to Normanton and even though we do not expect to get the whole way we want to do at least half.

Saw this Aboriginal rock art on the way out of town.  Apologies for the poor picture, but it was into the sun as it was coming up.

Also saw Croydon's newest housing development.

Knocked off the first 40 km fairly quickly and stopped off at Black Bull Siding for an early lunch...wraps with boiled egg and Kraft cheddar cheese...Hmmmmm yummy.

Black Bull Siding used to be a stop for the Gulflander but is no longer used except for buggered old buggers like us.

The road was a bit boring all day, same scenery over and over again.

I thought it might be better on the train, the Gulflander that runs close to the road, but no, looked much the same.

We thought we had another 40 km in our legs so kept pumping and after doing 97 kms stopped at a rest area shelter about 1:30 pm.  It started to rain while we were there so we stayed until 3:30 to rest the legs and wait until the rain stopped.  Boiled the billy and had another wrap to keep us going.

Rested, we got back on the bikes and finally arrived at Leichardt Lagoon which is about 20 km from Normanton.  130 kms is our longest day of all our trips.  Lucky we had good weather and a flat road all the way.

The caravan park at Leichardt Lagoon is bush camping, so pretty basic.  Unisex toilets and showers made out of corrugated iron but believe me it was heaven to us.  Some people look like they have been coming here for years.

It started raining again while we were setting up the tents and Graeme, the guy across the road offered us the use of his fire to cook and the veranda on his caravan to eat.  Great bloke.

  1. Hi Joe & Tony

We have just finalised the itinerary for our trip to the Northern Territory, Timor Leste and The Ghan.

As we discussed at Andrew & Lorraine's retirement lunch, Barb and I will be in Darwin several times during June and July. Hopefully at some stage our plans overlap and we can catch for a chat (meal/drink) about your bike adventures etc. Maybe we can take a photo as you cross the finish line in Darwin for stage 4 of your bike tour. If you send me your non-ATO email address I can email you a copy of our itinerary.

Hope all is going well and the road trains are not causing too many problems.

    Have fun
    Andrew Lowe
